Horsforth Newlaithes

Primary School

We had a brilliant Healthy Living Week 2018!

All Newlaithes pupils had a week of sports, healthy eating, and healthy mind learning. We gave the pupils a varied and hopefully different week experiencing some parts of keeping healthy that the pupils have not experienced before.

We kicked off the week with a brilliant sports morning for KS1 and an afternoon for KS2. All pupils participated and really enjoyed their own races and challenges. Thank you to Mr Pieniazek.

On Tuesday morning we had a whole school assembly to show the pupils what the week was about. Thanks to some willing (and not so willing!) members of staff and pupils who volunteerd to represent their house team with the aim of winning points by completing some healthy challenges.

Every day pupils were invited to Wake up Shake up in the hall before school to get their bodies and brains ready for a busy day. Thanks to the pupils and Miss Bonthron who demonstrated the routines everyday.

Over the week the Food Ambassadors visited every class in school to start their 'Pass it on' challenge. The aim of the challenge is for a recipe to be 'passed on'. They visited KS1 on Tuesday and made healthy chicken nuggets in front of the pupils. So 8 pupils taught 182 pupils how to make chicken nuggets! Hopefully the pupils can then make them at home and not only be able to make a healthy meal but could 'pass on' the recipe to someone else. In KS2 the pupils were taught how to make a 'hidden veg' spaghetti bolognaise. The Food Ambassadors did a great job of explaining how they learnt to make it and then let every pupil have a taste! We would love you to have a go at home, if you do please send us a photo! The recipes and PPT are on the Food Ambassadors section of this website.

On Wednesday our great Sports Leaders, with the support of Ellis from Leeds Rhinos, led a great carousel of activities on the school field. The pupils got to challenge themselves at javalin, running and speed bounce to name a few.

Year 4 were very lucky to have a talk from Julie and Niko who both work at the Broadgate Chiropractor clinic in Horsforth. They were taught about posture, relaxation, sleeping and something that is very important body position when playing games on tablets or phones. The pupils really enjoyed the visit and we are hoping to start a new after school club focusing on this with the support of Julie in the new school year. If you are interested in using the services at Broadgate Chiropractor clinic please contact them on http://www.broadgatechiropractic.com

KS1 and reception had a session learning about keeping their teeth healthy. Catherine Simpson (a parent) came and taught the pupils how to brush their teeth and what foods to not eat to keep their teeth healthy. All the pupils in recpection recieved a free toothbrush and toothpaste and KS1 got a pencil! Thank you for giving up your time Catherine.

On Thursday we challenged the whole school to a Zumbathon! Each class went into the hall throughout the day to keep the Zumba going!

Everyday the pupils did their daily mile (14 laps of the playground or 8 laps or the field!). On Thursday the pupils were invited to wear a wacky costume or accessory to run the mile and there were some great costumes!

Within each class the pupils learnt about healthy eating, did a MindMate lesson (keeping your mental health healthy) and mindfullness activities.

Mrs Atcheson launched a healthy lunch competion. Pupils were asked to design a healthy school lunch or lunchbox and could win their lunch ideas being put on the school menu.

All in all we had a great, fun packed week and the pupils definitely enjoyed everything especially in the glorious weather.

We have sent home some leaflets promoting cooking classes over the summer holidays for children with a company who are going to support the Food Ambassadors next year. If you are interested in booking your child on please find the information on https://get-cooking.org.uk

Another great Healthy Living Week at Newlaithes!
