|At Horsforth Newlaithes Primary School we believe that physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of young people and through participation in sport and physical education, young people learn more about key values such as teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others. Our aim is to develop confident and creative young people who strive to achieve their potential through an enjoyable PE curriculum and a wide range of sporting opportunities.
|At Horsforth Newlaithes every child receives 2 hours of curriculum PE every week. In physical education children take part in a wide variety of activities. They learn that being active is fun and that it is important to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. In Key Stage One (KS1), children experience dance, games, athletics, gymnastics and multi skills. In Key Stage Two, in addition to the KS1 aspects, pupils also have lessons in swimming and outdoor/adventurous activities.|
|In gymnastics children use the large apparatus which enables them to develop their gross motor skills (climbing, jumping, balance etc). We play a wide variety of team games and during fine weather we take advantage of our playing field for outdoor activities of many kinds. Lessons involving the use of small apparatus (bats, balls, skipping ropes etc) develop the children's fine motor skills, such as catching, throwing and hand/eye co-ordination. During the summer the children do athletics on the school field and learn the fundamentals of running, jumping and throwing events.
We have recently installed an orienteering course which enables children to take part in outdoor and adventurous activities both individually and as a team. Building on children’s map reading skills, it can also be used to enhance other areas of the curriculum.
|Children in Year 4 attend weekly swimming lessons and this programme includes water confidence, safety and stroke technique.
